Fish tank aquariums come in many different sizes and shapes. There are certain aquarium setups that work best on fresh water fish, while there are those that are made especially for saltwater organisms. If you are planning to set up an aquarium soon, you have come to the right place. Read on and get to know tips on how you can set up your very own fish tanks at home.
The very first thing that you need to do is to procure all the basic equipment needed for your aquarium setup. The first on the list is the tank itself. Decide on your preferred tank size and shape before actually going shopping. If you are planning to buy a large aquarium, make sure that you have enough space to accommodate the fish tank. It is also very important to consider the kind of fish that you are planning to put inside your fish tanks as there are some fish that strictly require larger spaces for swimming. Apart from that, you'll also need to procure a good filter, aerator and a base insert to ensure proper water aeration. If you are living in colder climate, you might also need to get a heater to maintain suitable temperatures for your fish.
Position your aquarium stand and your aquarium away from direct sunlight and heat. These external heat sources can alter the water temperature inside your fish tank aquariums and possibly, affect the health of your fish as well. Before putting your equipment and your fish inside the tank, make sure that you prep it well. Never use detergents for cleaning as they may leave chemical residues that are harmful for your fish. Use hot water to take out bacteria and dirt from your tank instead.
After cleaning your fish tank aquariums, you can now put your under-gravel filter on the base. Make sure that you follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. Prepare the gravel by washing it with hot water and sifting it thoroughly to kill bacteria and take out any unnecessary debris. Slowly add it in to cover to under-gravel filter.
After filling up the entire base, you can now start decorating the space. Try not to fill your entire area with decors to give your fish enough space to swim around. Never use accessories and decors that are not made especially for aquarium use as they may also contain harmful chemical residues. Again, wash all of your accessories and decors with hot water before putting them inside your fish tank aquariums.
Once the heater is properly positioned inside your fish tank aquariums, give the thermostat time to adjust to the ambient water temperature before turning it on. Remember, different fish and aquatic plant species prefer to live at certain temperature ranges so make sure that you do your research beforehand. After this, you can now set up your aquarium filter by following the manufacturer's instructions.
After this, you can now start filling your fish tanks with water. Use dechlorinated water at room temperature. Check for possible leaks by letting the setup stand for a few minutes. Let all of the equipment run before transferring your fish into the tank to check for any malfunctions.
