Kitchen sinks are fixed structures that a house or business establishment can live without. Sometimes, a kitchen sink is composed of not just one, but two and sometimes three bowls for easy cleaning and food preparation.
Because the kitchen is a place where heavy tasks are performed, the sink should be ready to shoulder those tasks daily. Meaning, the sink must be of good quality. However, do not forget that it should match the kitchen and the family's lifestyle. Physical appearance is a factor in considering a sink.
Faucets are integrated in sinks. While some sinks only have one faucet handle to release cold water, some have separate handles to choose between hot and cold, or sometimes to combine them. Some sinks have strainers to prevent solid food particles from going through the pipe and plugs to shut off draining. Modern sinks nowadays have built-in liquid soap dispenser.
Sinks are constructed with different materials, but the most popular when it comes to durability, cost-effectivity and free maintenance, stainless steel is the best. Sink manufacturers commonly use 304 series stainless steel which contains 18/10 chrome or nickel. There are diverse types of sink finishes namely: mirror, satin, brush and matte.
There are two type of sink installation: top mount which is also called self-rimming, and under mount which is known as bottom-mount. Some hotels prefer an undermount stainless steel kitchen sink, while in residential houses, there is a majority of topmount sinks. When you say top mount, the sink hooks its rim on the edge of a hole made from the countertop. Undermount, on the other hand, the term itself implies being mounted beneath the counter top with the help of mounting tools and using silicone sealants to waterproof the space between countertop and sink.
While small kitchens, as well as bars, commonly use sinks with single bowl, average-sized kitchens use two-bowl sinks instead because of its functionality and practicality. Sinks with triple-bowls are ideal to use in restaurant kitchens.
Whether you are installing topmount or undermount stainless steel kitchen sink, it is better to ask a professional to do it for you. It may seem easy and simple, but you may accidentally damage your countertop or crack a pipe while exercising a do-it-yourself attitude.
Before buying a sink, make sure it is certified as 304 surgical grade stainless steel. It should have passed the qualifications set by AMSE A112.19.3-2000 Stainless steel plumbing fixtures. During plumbing inspection, local building inspectors require a certification from UPC or from IAPMO testing facility. Several companies who manufacture sinks of ultimate quality are already certified.
