Castor Oil For Stretch Marks by Sergen Roberts
Stretch marks which appear as discolored scars on the body can affect both men and women. The most common causes are: weight gain, weight loss, obesity, muscle toning, swelling, hormone replacement therapy and pregnancy. Although they are not dangerous, stretch marks can be a matter of anxiety to the person and can often result in low self esteem and self worth. The most common areas of the body where they can appear are the abdomen, thighs, breasts buttocks and upper arms. About 75 to 90% of pregnant women develop stretch marks. Most of these women develop them during pregnancy because their stomack seriously increases in the size and the skin in that area is overstretched.
A number of creams and oils have been used to treat or prevent the problem. Castor oil has special significance due to its therapeutic properties. It has been used for eons for topical healing of various skin abnormalities and ailments in the form of massage oils and in recent times in medicines, soaps and cosmetics. It has anti-inflammatory properties and contains antioxidants. The oil can be rubbed on affected areas for example during pregnancy to prevent or reduce their formation. If stretch marks already present then castor oil application to the affected area followed by application of a heating pad is known to considerably reduce the marks if practiced everyday for 15 to 45 days. This oil is the only source of Ricinoleic acid, can reduce and remove scars due to its ability to penetrate deep in the tissue and break up scar tissue while keeping the normal surrounding tissue healthy.
Castor oil or Palma Christi (palm of Christ), as referred to in the Middle Ages, owing to its therapeutic properties reminiscent of the healing abilities of the Christ, is a safe and inexpensive solution for preventing or removing striae with no known side effects when topically applied. Castor oil is widely available as an over the counter product.
