How To Create A Picture Frame Display

There are lots of tips on how to install hanging hardware on your frame because that is what people always focus on when hanging their frames. However, aesthetic considerations regarding where and in what formation to hang pictures in an interior are just as important an undertaking.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to arranging your picture frames; whether or not you like the final result is the ultimate rule of thumb to go by. With that being said, there are some guidelines you can use when it comes to arranging picture frame displays.

Pictures that are randomly spaced out over a large area are not as pleasing to look at than if they were to be hung in a group to form a block. Unless you have a really large picture it is best to avoid hanging a single frame on the wall otherwise it often can look out of place. The exception, of course, would be if the artwork is a very large print or poster, or a large 11x14 picture frame that’s strong enough visually and imposing enough to make a statement on its own on the wall.

Being Practical Works

You can display a picture frame on any flat surface but it should be practical where it won't get knocked off or damaged like in a narrow hallway. This may cause you to have to constantly straighten the picture or even worse, cause a frame to fall off the wall and break.

Watch out for hanging pictures near areas of extreme temperatures like an air conditioner or heater vent. The heat, dust and grease can permanently damage your photo and frame so it's best to avoid any heater vents or radiators when hanging your picture frames.

Pictures also shouldn’t be hung in direct sunlight or opposite a window, most especially if they are valuable. Watercolors fade easily, so they are particularly vulnerable to damage from sunlight. If you put your hanging picture frames on the wall with glass, try to avoid hanging them opposite a window as the window reflection will make the picture hard to see.

Picking the Right Wall

Use the furniture in the room as a guide to figure out where the vertical boundaries are for your frames. Imagine a rectangle “drawn” on the wall up from the outer edges of the piece of furniture, be it a side board, chest of drawers, or a sofa. This principle works as well for the space above a bed or other furniture pieces.

Plain or light colored walls will always look best if you use stronger colors of picture frames so the picture will really pop. Photographs and monochrome prints also look nice displayed on light colored walls.

For colored walls, it’s usually best to mimic the color scheme of the room in some way, like in the color of the picture mat – or you can use the mat as an effective contrast to your color scheme. If you have dark colored walls, it's best to use light colored mats to help set off your framed pictures.

Different considerations need to be taken when hanging pictures on patterned walls so as to avoid the appearance that the wall and the picture are fighting for attention. The picture frame that will look the best will be heavily dependent upon the color, size and style of your wall. A mat is essential to clearly define the picture.
